Strouden Community Centre

On the 5th March 1986 a public meeting was held in the scout hall with the Reverend Paul Renyard. A decision was made to start a community centre on the old services Centre Store. The centre was a very run down building with doors missing and in desperate need of refurbishment. The community raised money to purchase paint etc. by holding jumble sales and other fund raising events.

Over the following year a committee was formed and a constitution was agreed and the Mayor of Bournemouth formally opened the Community Centre.Strouden Community Centre

The committee consists of a chairperson, Secretary, treasurer and five other committee members.

Over the years the Committee have renewed the Central heating system (gas boiler and radiators); installed a suspended ceiling throughout the building; fitted carpets to the major rooms; renewed tables and chairs and kitchen equipment; re modelled and fitted a catering kitchen to comply with the food hygiene regulations for the centres two lunch clubs.

The long awaited redevelopment for the community centre started at the beginning of April 2011 and is due to take approximately 12 months.

There are two areas in Strouden which are to be developed.
Two sites in the Strouden Park area of Bournemouth will be developed, providing a new community centre, nine family houses and eight bungalows

The first site at Bradpole Road has an existing community centre which is no longer fit for purpose and plans have been made to replace it with a brand new facility as well as nine family houses. The second site at Craigmoor Avenue will see a disused play area developed with eight new bungalows.

The scheme will be funded by developer contributions and the Council's housing capital and through prudential borrowing. In addition the Council has submitted a bid for £901,000 to the Homes and Communities Agency (HCA). The total cost of the scheme is £2.2m (£430,000 for the community centre and £1.77m for the housing).

Community Groups who use the centre are using temporary accommodation and will return when the new centre is built. If you wish to know where the groups are please look at the groups section.

The current committee is now in a position to invite members of the community to join the committee and bring some fresh ideas and energy to the Community Centre.
